online information for enterprise and economic development:

Business Networking is conversation. The mission of The Network could be rewritten to state that it exists to bring people together so that they can have conversations about the kind of enterprise development that leads to economic development happen

Walt Howe of Sanibel Island, FL once indicated that the Internet exists as a result of visionary thinkers seeing ... great potential value in allowing computers to share information (source of quote). Sharing implies freely given.

Many regional and local public libraries are significant contributors within resource supplier networks dedicated to enterprise and economic development because of the Internet.

Libraries may have information about locations as defined in the Enterprise and Economic Development Glossary, copies of community profiles, for example. Libraries that operate with a best practice approach are mindful of the purview of area and local economic development representatives as well as that of their chambers of commerce that supply location data to prospects. The best libraries online have knowledgeable staff available to guide users to appropriate contacts for obtaining additional information as well as assistance to prospects.

Regional and local public libraries as well as those offering business and enterprise development information and location data at institutions of higher learning are listed among location data suppliers in the .network resource file: About Economic Development, Page 4.

The Enterprise and Economic Development Library online has sections dedicated to free-access business resources, enterprise development and locations for site selection.

Use the search engine at the top of this page to Google the Web for location data suppliers.

Institutions of higher learning are sometimes in the mix of location data suppliers working together for community, enterprise and economic development in an area. Their libraries may be open to prospects looking for information about places of interest. There may have community profiles available, for example. Their business schools may reach out and offer enterprise development resources to the same target audience that The Network serves. Community spirited institutions often have outreach programs that include support for economic development. Library contacts at institutions of higher learning are a good place to start if you want to find out what programs and resources are available. Like the public libraries that operate with a best practice approach, colleges and universities should have library staff who can answer questions and offer guidance on resource suppliers in the areas where they are located.

economic development market research

... the objective collection and analysis of a set of data about a place for the purpose of understanding its location area as a market and, in addition, for the purpose of organizing the data either for advertising and promotions or distribution to prospects. This specialized area of market research also includes the systematic process of collecting and analyzing statistics and other factual information about locations considered as competitors in attracting economic development opportunities. Those who are responsible for promoting locations should have an agenda of market research covering all that they represent as well as the places with which they compete. The practice of economic development within a free-enterprise system is carried out in an environment of competitiveness. The site selection process, which is a source of economic development, is sophisticated to the extend that research is called for to support comparative analysis. It behooves the local development representative to understand how to conduct and use both types of research for the purposes indicated in this paragraph.

See the article, Need Market Research? Check Your Local Economic Development Organization (2007), by Anita Campbell at the Small Business Trends website.

Another definition of economic development market research covers the process of seeking opportunities. In this case the market is where the prospects are located. The research is a systematic collection and analysis of information related to target industriesdashmore.

economic development marketing research

Given that an association of US economic developers at one time choose marketing as the operative word to describe what practitioners do, the important role of research is emphasized here. Economic development marketing research is an activity that contributes to making informed decisions about where to commit limited resources for attracting the attention of prospects to a location. Marketing research, in general, is the development of useful information for identifying and defining opportunities to igniting interests in something so as to facilitate its positioning in commercial transactions. Marketing research has to do with putting something, such as funds, in place for an intended affect. Market research has to do with understanding a place that is an environment for commercial transactions in terms of specific products or services.

tourism marketing is a form of economic development:
spacer
There are several sources of information online about tourism as economic development:

Tourism emerging as a catalyst for economic development is the title of a July 28, 2007 article by Rich Harrill that that appeared in The Greenville News, Greenville, SC. Harrill stated that the nature of tourism employment is changing, ... shedding it low-wage image through entrepreneurship spawned by tourism-related industries and the development of a tourism-oriented government sector. This is encouraging to economic development practitioners who see themselves as facilitating the creation of opportunities for higher paying jobs in the locations they representdashsee economic development's relationship to job creation as one of the definitions available through the Economic Development Network website.

A review at the University of Michigan website of preparation and results in a community before and after the 2002 Winter Olympics titled Park City , Utah 's Successful Combination of Tourism and Recreation Activities Creates Healthy Economic Development (by Nicki Sitko) is a resource for those interested in sports and tourism as economic development. Two additional sports/tourism related resources are an online announcement of a 2005 seminar in Zagreb, Croatia and the enterprise and economic development guide developed after the 1996 Summer Olympics discussed as follows:

Tourism as Economic Development: A Brief Guide for Communities and Enterprise Developers was published as a paper for sharing resources with .network users as well as serving as the concluding report to the Georgia Tourism Division following its writer's development of a network for prospect development in advance of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. This resource addresses the fundamentals of economic development. For example, it points to the fact that economic developers are specialized marketers of locations. The same can be said for those engaged in tourism promotion. They are specialized marketers

If you are interested in sharing resources in the area of tourism or any other enterprise and economic development efforts, including site location work, The Network welcomes your input.

Using the phrase "target industry studies" in combination with the words economic development to search the Web at one time returned a number of links to websites of educational institutions which have outreach programs for helping local communities. Mostly we found links to websites of locations seeking economic development which had target industry studies in hand. Our search found an abstract from a resource paper with discussions about ... the commonalities and differences in local and regional economic development (LRED) across England, Northern Ireland, Australia and the US.
