city-region:

. . . an area which has a location identity the same as that which is the name of its principal center of commerce and trade — a relatively populous place as compared to other community centers within the area. Places providing names for city-regions are typically transportation hubs. The complexity of hubs range from crossroads to multimodel networks.

The term city region has been around and used basically to identify metropolitan areas since the mid-20th century at least. Terms such as micropolitan and megapolitan have, however, since come into play. Here we (who we are) define city region in terms of various applications; for example, its enterprise and economic development application as follows:

Many enterprise development projects are for site selection, some of them local, some regional. It would not be unusual to see a person assigning a regional site selection project point to a map and say something like . . . We need to find a location within an hour's drive from this city's commercial airport. The hour's drive sets the boundaries for the search region. The name of the city pointed to identifies a city-region.

You can search this website you are using for a place of interest that you think might lend its name for the identity of a region. City-region documents in this Site Location Assistance website are an extension of the Global Registry of Contacts.
